Kate Davis has teamed up with the Daniel Johnston charity the Hi How Are You Project. This Saturday, October 9th, the singer/songwriter and bassist will be part of the organization’s live-streamed Mental Health Day program, which will also include performances by musicians like Jeff Tweedy, Lucius, Bully, and Molly Burch. Additionally, Davis is readying a cover album of Daniel’s Retired Boxer, with a portion of the proceeds from sales/streaming going to the charity.

The Hi How Are You Project began on January 22nd, 2018. Founded by Austinites Tom Gimbel and Courtney Blanton, and inspired by musician/artist Daniel Johnston’s iconic friendly frog mural with its affable tag-line, as well as the artist’s own struggles with mental health, the effort launched with a request to check in on a neighbor, friend, or co-worker to genuinely ask, “Hi, how are you?” The success of the event, coupled with support from Johnston’s family, allowed Gimbel and Blanton to form the organization as way of addressing mental health through the creation of media, projects, and events.

Kate Davis will release her cover of Retired Boxer on January 15th, 2021 via Solitaire Recordings. Below, you can listen to her cover of the album’s lead track, “I’ll Do Anything But Break Dance For Ya, Darling.”
