More exquisite magick from Julia Holter this week! The artist is preparing to release her third LP Loud City Song, via Domino Records on August 20th. This will be Holter’s first studio recording, and we are told that the nine songs on the new record pre-date those on her 2011 debut Tragedy. Inspired by Collette’s 1944 novella Gigi, she uses it as a launching point to explore her relationship with Los Angeles. While the song’s for the record were more recently worked on at her home, they were finally recorded in a studio with a host of LA musicians, and co-produced by Cole Marsden Grief-Neill. While Holter claims she was influenced by Joni Mitchell and NY poet Frank O’Hara, “World“, with it’s multi-faceted, ambulating structure, orchestral underpinnings, and strangely poetic vocal delivery, has a real Scott Walker vibe. Like yesterday’s video for “Finale“, “World” has been shot on Super 8 by Rick Bahto, though today’s video follows a more peripatetic tact as it uses liminal, abstract snippets of film to depict LA’s urban existence in dreamy tones of blue, orange, black and white.
