Today, we have a double dose from the prolific and ever restless Ty Segall. Sleeper, which came out yesterday on Drag City Records, is Segall’s first album of 2013. Recorded to 8-track in a San Fransisco apartment, the album dials back the space-fuzz fury of 2012’s Twins, in favor of a more stripped down, acoustic driven batch of tunes. For instance, the title track “Sleeper” (sorry, since publishing, the video for this track has been removed by Drag City) finds Segall strumming and harmonizing in a sweet melodic haze that brings to mind Hunky Dory and The Man Who Sold the World-era David Bowie.
Also, on October 1st, Segall’s metal-tinged, scuzz-rock band Fuzz will issue their self-titled debut on In The Red Records. For the album, Segall moves to drums, with Ty Segall Band’s Charlie Moonheart on guitar, and Roland Cosio on bass. Together, this power trio lays down some seriously heavy scuzz-grooves. The six minute track “Loose Sutures” brings searing, fuzz-laden riffs, propulsive drums solos, and some truly trippy sounding vocals.
