Listen: Vessel “Red Sex”

1764

The Bristol-based electronic artist Vessel will follow-up his stunning debut LP Order of Noise with a new 2xLP Punish, Honey, due out September 15th via Tri Angle Records. For the new effort, Vessel has chosen to push his sound further left-of-field by creating the actual instruments he would use for recording, rather than resorting to “iconic” electronic instrumentation and sound. This means that he has used sheets of metal for percussion, built flutes from sawed apart bikes, as well as building his own “harmonic guitars”. “Red Sex” is our first listen in on the new work, and it becomes immediately apparent that this analogue instrumentation provides a real weight and heft to the work, as deeply textured, jack hammer rhythms pound with menacing, mindless abandon, before mysterious and seductive “melodies” buzz and seeth thru the audio space with strange resonances. About halfway thru, the rhythm reconvenes on itself, slowly reassembling, as slippery harmonics snake around with menacing insistence! Vessel has a handful of select US dates, including tonight in Lexington, KY at Cosmic Charlies…
